Texturing and Finishing Thin Veneers
One of my favorite places to work is my home studio lab. I also maintain a lab at my office, and both environments provide a deep sense of satisfaction and creative focus. In this article, I want to walk through my workflow for processing veneers after they come out of the milling unit — specifically focusing on ultra-thin veneer cases, where precision and restraint are essential.
When working with very thin veneers, there is limited room for aggressive surface texturing after milling. Because of this constraint, I aim to complete approximately 90–95% of the final design in the software stage. This includes line angles, emergence profile, and primary contours.
The goal is simple: let the mill do most of the work. Once the restoration is milled, I perform only micro-refinement, avoiding heavy adjustments that could compromise structural integrity. This approach preserves accuracy and reduces the risk of overworking delicate ceramic.
